Going zero waste is one of the best ways you can care for the environment and for future generations. Not only will you be far from toxic materials, you will also save money. It’s a little difficult when you’re starting it. Once you learn to be creative and mindful of your life choices, you will find yourself changed for the better.

Among the many aspects of one’s daily routine one can change by going zero waste are baths, brushing your teeth, and food.

You can go zero waste in bathing by choosing bars over liquid soap or shampoo. Not only do you say no to plastic packaging, you will also find great for traveling and gifting. It’s also better for your hair and body because you are safe from dangerous additives used in commercial shampoos, such as sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium lauryl sulfate. Most importantly, you get much more bang for your buck because a shampoo bar outlasts liquid shampoo or soap.

Toothbrushes are another thing you consider getting a zero waste option. Most toothbrushes in the market today are made of plastic and not recyclable. Worse, they cause havoc in ecosystems as animals mistake them for food or get hurt upon contact. But there is a better option. A bamboo toothbrush. The toothbrush handle is completely compostable at its end of life, but first you need to separate the bristles which are recyclable.

Lastly, when it comes to food, particularly dining out, one of the crucial modern dilemmas is the straw. Most straws are still plastic, which harm turtles and various other marine animals worldwide. But if you want to be more sustainable, you can get a reusable straw. You can wash it after use then store it for later.

Hence, as part of the Zero Waste month last January, the Zero Waste Lifestyle System conducted a giveaway with prizes such as shampoo and conditioner bars, jute scrubs, stainless steel straws, tooth powder and bamboo toothbrushes. We hope that these items will help kickstart a journey to zero waste living.

We partnered with AMGU, a zero waste store in Cebu City, Philippines. Founded by Jane Sumabong and Rangi Joy Madarang, it opened on April 21, 2019. AMGU comes from “amgu”, which means awareness in Cebuano. Like the Zero Waste Lifestyle System, AMGU seeks to advocate a low-impact lifestyle in a budget-friendly way.

Congratulations to the following who will receive zero waste goodies from AMGU to kickstart their sustainable living journey.
